EMDR Therapy. What is EMDR Therapy and what are the benefits?



I was first introduced to EMDR when I sought out therapy to help me process the trauma I experienced after giving birth to my twin girls at 23 weeks.  I had engaged in typical talk therapy but found my symptoms of PTSD continued, regardless of my efforts in therapy.   EMDR was an incredibly transformational healing experience for me.  It allowed me to move through the trauma, the pain I was storing physically, and all my emotions (fear, anger, grief, etc. ) and come to a new level of adaptive thinking and, ultimately, healing.  It was my own experience that motivated me to take the training, and I knew that EMDR was going to be the basis of my clinic, Mind Shift Therapy.   In the realm of therapeutic modalities, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) stands out as a powerful and transformative approach to addressing trauma and related mental health challenges. Developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR has gained widespread recognition for helping individuals process and overcome the lingering effects of distressing life experiences. This blog delves into the nuances of EMDR therapy, exploring its techniques, underlying principles, and the profound impact it can have on the healing journey.  


Understanding EMDR:

  1. Bilateral Stimulation and Adaptive Processing: At the core of EMDR lies the concept of bilateral stimulation—engaging both brain hemispheres through controlled eye movements, tapping, or auditory cues. This stimulation facilitates adaptive information processing, allowing the brain to reorganize and reframe distressing memories, ultimately reducing their emotional charge.

  2. Eight Phases of EMDR Therapy: EMDR follows a structured eight-phase protocol. It begins with a comprehensive history-taking phase, followed by preparation, assessment, and desensitization. The subsequent phases involve installing positive beliefs, conducting a body scan, closure, and reevaluation. This systematic approach provides a roadmap for therapists and clients to navigate the therapeutic process.

  3. Trauma Reprocessing: The desensitization phase focuses on specific target memories while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation. This process allows individuals to reprocess traumatic memories, fostering the integration of more adaptive thoughts and emotions. Over time, the distress associated with these memories diminishes.

  4. Installation of Positive Beliefs: EMDR emphasizes the cultivation of positive and empowering beliefs to replace negative cognitions associated with trauma. This installation phase is crucial for enhancing overall well-being and resilience.

  5. Body Scan and Closure: The body scan phase involves checking for any residual tension or discomfort associated with the targeted memory, promoting overall relaxation. Closure ensures that individuals stabilize emotionally before concluding a session.


Benefits of EMDR:

  1. Effective Treatment for PTSD: EMDR has garnered significant recognition as a highly effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Numerous studies attest to its efficacy in reducing the symptoms of PTSD and improving overall mental health.

  2. Versatility in Application: While initially designed for trauma, EMDR has demonstrated versatility in addressing various mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and phobias. Its adaptability makes it a valuable therapeutic tool across different clinical contexts.

  3. Accelerated Processing of Traumatic Memories: EMDR is known for its ability to expedite the processing of traumatic memories. Compared to traditional talk therapies, it often achieves therapeutic goals in a shorter time frame.
